The Sunday morning dog walk was going to be an adventure, so I chose a new cigar released by Pete Johnson and his brother KC Johnson (Tatuaje makers) at the 2013 IPCPR trade show. This is one of his latest cigars to be released and his first true Maduro cigar. Previously the “Surrogates” line had claims to maduro filler but were not in my opinion a true maduro cigar.
The smell and construction of the cigar immediately after removing the cellophane were very distinct, there were hints of pepper and leather in the first inspection. Upon initial lighting of the cigar, the pepper and leather tastes held true through the first third of the cigar. The ash and burn of the cigar remained consistent even on a damp Seattle morning dog walk. If you like a lot of smoke, then this is a great choice.
I really enjoyed this cigar down to the nub, and even got my fingers hot. This cigar would be great with a cup of coffee to really bring out what I think they were going for and that is the spice. The strength of the cigar was not over powering and could easily be a first choice to start the day.
I would easily give this an 8 out of 10 on my Smoke Ring scale. I will be revisiting this cigar for my own enjoyment, and glad that I picked up a 5 pack when I found them. Get out on your deck or in your backyard and try this, you won’t be disappointed.
